Family
Sam was the child of Hamfast Gamgee and Bell Goodchild. Not much is known about the couple, other than that Hamfast worked as the gardener of Bag End, a role in which Sam often helped him. Sam called his father the Gaffer, a nickname that suggests Hamfast was a man of firm character and strong opinions.
Sam had two brothers - Hamson and Halfred - and three sisters: Daisy, May, and Marigold.
Each of them belonged to the wider Gamgee family, a humble but respected Hobbiton clan.
[ wife and children ]
After the War of the Ring, Sam married Rose Cotton, with whom he had thirteen children: Frodo Gardner, Elanor, Rose, Merry, Pippin, Goldilocks, Hamfast, Daisy, Primrose, Bilbo, Ruby, Robin, and Tolman (Tom).
Sam had always felt a quiet affection for Rosie. They were close friends throughout their childhood, and Rosie expected him to propose long before he finally did. But Sam, at that time, left the Shire with Frodo on their perilous mission, and the moment had to wait.
Sam and Rose were married in May of 3020. After Frodo departed for the Undying Lands, the couple settled in Bag End, where Sam became Master of the Hill.
Tolkien himself wrote that the peaceful, ordinary life Sam and Rosie built was essential after all the pain, danger, and sacrifice. Sam was a hero - but even heroes need normalcy. In marrying Rose, Sam found someone who loved him deeply and grounded him in the simple, steady life of the Shire.
[ best friend ]
But… but! Speaking of family - nd even though I plan to add a special section to this topic - I cannot avoid mentioning Frodo. Friends, especially the kind for whom you would give your life and move mountains, are family in a non‑literal sense.
Frodo was Sam’s family by heart, not by blood or marriage. He was the first and last person in Sam’s life of such unique importance. Their bond went beyond friendship; it was a devotion that shaped both their fates and ultimately saved Middle‑earth.
